WORKER BEES

Mosaic & Paint, 200 ft x 3.5 ft.

Dedication: Saturday, June 13th, 11am at Tillary St. and Jay St., Brooklyn.

Groundswell Artists: Clare Herron & Chris Beck

Our Tuesday after-school group created mosaic elements incorporated into areas of painted surface for one 200 foot-long concrete traffic barrier at Tillary Street in Downtown Brooklyn. The mural team took a small process in nature (pollination) and showed its significance on a larger scale. Focusing on human interaction and interference with nature, the mural displays similarities between humans and bees (e.g. work, class, hierarchy) and translates that in a visual narrative that follows the path of bike/car traffic, starting at the beginning of the traffic barrier and ending at the traffic light at Cadman Plaza where people travel to and from work. The piece is on both sides of the 200 foot-long barrier.

NATURAL INSPIRATION

Acrylic on parachute cloth, 8 x 40 ft

Dedication: Wednesday, June 3rd, 4:30pm at BRC Women’s Residence, 85 Lexington Ave (between Classon & Franklin), Brooklyn.

Groundswell Artists: Alex Pimienta & Crystal Bruno

Our Wednesday after-school mural team created a painted mural for the lobby of BRC Women’s Residence in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. The team interviewed residents of the women’s shelter about what they hoped to see in this mural. Taking themes of nature, hope, welcome and renewal, the artists created a bright, inspiring mural depicting a woman surrounded by flowers and birds, opening her hands in welcome to everyone who enters the lobby.
